Where the Satire Ends

Everything in this episode is based on how the airline business actually works.

When an airline performs badly, it often announces that executives are leaving, and the news reports it as a shakeup. What usually happens next is that those same executives take senior jobs at other companies, often with signing bonuses and stock packages. Getting "fired" at this level rarely means a career ends. It means it relocates.

Stock buybacks are real too. An airline can spend billions buying its own shares, which pushes the share price up. Since executives are paid largely in stock, they benefit directly. In the decade before the pandemic, major U.S. airlines spent most of their spare cash this way. When the pandemic hit, they asked taxpayers for help and received tens of billions in relief.

The cost-cutting in the episode is standard practice: fewer crew members per flight, more seats per cabin, and new fees. And the bankruptcy plan isn't a joke either. Most large U.S. airlines have been through bankruptcy at some point, shedding debts and pension obligations along the way, and came out the other side just fine. The executives generally did too. The workers' retirements often didn't.

A report card is coming. Management's grades are historically poor. Management has scheduled a housecleaning for the day before.

The flight attendants at one of the biggest airlines in the country intend to grade management’s performance and publish the results. This has happened before, at another carrier, five years ago. The scores were memorable. Management remembers them.

The response was approved at altitude, somewhere over the Atlantic. It involves a list. The press will receive the list with the correct framing, and counsel has been assured the framing is the only part that matters.

Two items remain open at landing. A contingency plan with a name management is fond of stays warm on the back burner. And one phone call is waiting at the office. A delicate one, being handled with all the patience the situation deserves.
